Keeper of the Sign

Marty Foley hard at work.

If anyone knows the CITGO sign in Kenmore Square, it's Marty Foley.

Marty first climbed to the top of the Cities Service sign in 1965. He must have liked what he saw, because he's been the sign's caretaker ever since. Over the years, Marty has maintained and cared for the sign through bulb burnouts and hurricanes, lightning storms and power outages. His ritual - hoisting himself around the face of the CITGO sign in a wooden swing - has become as much a part of Boston as the Boston skyline itself.

Next time you're close to Kenmore Square, look up in the sky for Marty. The Keeper of the Sign.
