Gasoline specifications have evolved along with automobile technology. Fuels have become cleaner burning, been blended to release greater energy per gallon and have become safer for the environment and the public.

CITGO is committed to developing and marketing the cleanest, most economical fuel its refineries can produce. In addition to making fuels better, CITGO spends millions of dollars annually on improved controls at its facilities to reduce emissions associated with the making and marketing of petroleum products.

Gasoline Grade
So which grade of CITGO gasoline is right for you?

  • Your first reference should be your vehicle Owner’s Manual. Each auto manufacturer provides the recommended minimum octane for normal operation of the vehicle.

  • As a general rule of thumb, however, use the octane grade which prevents your engine from knocking or pinging (engine knock is caused by the pre-ignition of fuel as it’s compressed in the cylinder, milliseconds before the normal spark plug firing).

CITGO provides three different octane grades of gasoline – complete with our proprietary high-performance detergent additive. The detergent additive that you will find in all grades of CITGO gasoline is designed to help keep your engine clean and performing well. This additive performance occurs without you having to worry about it. The detergent additives in all grades of CITGO gasoline comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) additive requirements.

Staying Safe
at the Gasoline Pump

Three rules for safe refueling: Turn off the engine, don’t smoke, and never re-enter your vehicle while refueling. Avoid problems by following these safe refueling procedures all year long.
