Camp Red Leaf, Ingleside, Illinois – June 20, 2012 – CITGO Lemont Refinery employees and their families spent the day with their friends from the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), helping out at one of its many Summer Camp sessions. Every summer for the past 57 years the MDA has sent more than 4,000 children and young adults living with neuromuscular diseases to 80 locations nationwide to participate in a week long camp.
Specially designed for young people with mobility challenges, the camp provides participants the rare opportunity to escape a world of limitations and enter into a community created entirely for them. MDA Summer Camp offers campers the freedom to simply be themselves and forget about the disabilities that often restrict them. It gives children the opportunity to spend time with peers who share the same needs as they do and create lifelong friendships while doing so. While each camp location is unique in its capabilities, the local camp in Ingleside, Illinois provides a variety of activities such as swimming, talent shows, arts and crafts, outdoor and indoor sports, and social events, among others.
The MDA has the pleasure of providing this experience at no cost to families only because of the generous year-round contributions and volunteer work the association receives from its sponsors, including CITGO. CITGO has proudly supported the MDA for the past 27 years and it is MDA’s largest corporate sponsor. Out of the various events held, Summer Camp is a highlight for Lemont Refinery Employees because it gives them the opportunity to spend time with those the Association is working for rather than simply fundraising.
Every year CITGO Lemont Refinery Employees venture up to Camp Red Leaf and join campers for their special “VIP Day.” This summer CITGO Employees worked with their fellow sponsors to create a carnival full of activities for the campers. The team filled up an entire park with carnival games, food decorating stands, tattoo painting, arts and crafts, a pie eating contest, a sundae making station, and many, many more. Volunteers had the chance to spend the day with the kids they sponsor year-round through their participation in fundraising events and at the end of the day everyone was treated to a personal tour of the campgrounds by the children.
“The kids at camp never cease to amaze me with how talented and full of joy they are,” said Project Engineering Manager of the CITGO Lemont Refinery, Dave Bors. “Every year our Refinery organizes an MDA Golf Outing and I have been on the Committee for the event for the past fourteen years. Participating in Summer Camp is great because our employees get to spend an entire day with the kids our fundraisers are helping. Summer Camp is a life-changing program and I feel privileged that our Refinery plays a role in ensuring that it is possible.”
“Our CITGO sponsors have done so much for us,” said Anna Fratto, Executive Director of the MDA Chicago-land offices. “We have worked with the Lemont Employees for so many years and we absolutely love having the chance to host them at camp every year and show them what all their hard work and help benefits. Our kids look forward to coming to camp all year round and the experience they get here has such a large impact on their lives. Without our sponsors camp would not be possible and each and every one of our campers and staff is thankful to everyone who supports MDA and Summer Camp.”
The CITGO Lemont Refinery employs more than 800 local residents on a full-time and contract basis in support of the local economy.
