Sulphur, La., Feb. 15, 2013 – On January 29, 2013, the employees of the CITGO Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex (LCMC) marked one full year worked without a recordable safety incident as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This is a major milestone in the industry and is the first time LCMC employees have hit the one-year mark. The LCMC is the fifth largest refinery in the nation, employing 1,148 regular full-time employees and 839 contractors.
“This is an extraordinary accomplishment, even with the focus on safety that CITGO Petroleum Corporation embraces as part of its culture. Each facility has regular training and drills to emphasize safety as our most important priority. All of our employees are committed to keeping themselves, their co-workers, contractors and the surrounding community and environment safe,” said Tomeu Vadell, Vice President and General Manager for the CITGO Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex. “As proud as we are, we won’t rest on our laurels. CITGO believes in a holistic approach with a strong commitment to continuous improvement practices. We must plan safety into everything we do and be diligent in performing each task, without incident.”
A recordable case as defined by OSHA is an occupational work injury or illness with medical treatment beyond which is considered first aid treatment, or an injury or illness that requires an employee to miss days away from his or her normal work. The LCMC record of one year is a substantial accomplishment, and reflective of the strong safety record that CITGO has.
Last year CITGO reported a significant improvement in its refining safety performance across all three refineries. According to industry figures released in June 2012 by the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM), CITGO excelled in these safety metrics with results significantly lower than the refining industry average.
Based in Houston, CITGO is a refiner, transporter and marketer of transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals and other industrial products. The company is owned by PDV America, Inc., an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A., the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
