Homer, Mich. – Mar. 24, 2015 – PS Food Mart and Folk Oil Company, a local CITGO Petroleum Corporation Marketer, surpassed its fundraising goal by more than $25,000 in its sixth annual fundraiser. “Fight Hunger, Give Hope” provides nourishment to thousands of families across southern Michigan through local food pantries, in collaboration with the Food Bank of South Central Michigan. The fundraiser ran in the month of March, raising a total of $78,000.

“Thanks to the generous efforts of PS Food Mart customers, the Food Bank of South Central Michigan will be able to put food on the tables of families in communities across Michigan,” said Holly Cavinder of the Food Bank of South Central Michigan, “We are a proud partner of ‘Fight Hunger, Give Hope’ and appreciate the support of PS Food Mart and Folk Oil.”

Customers were encouraged to “tear a square” by making either $1 or $5 donations at participating PS Food Mart locations throughout Branch, Calhoun, Hillsdale, Jackson and Lenawee counties. Donations of $1 will provide six meals to families in need, while $5 donations will generate 30 meals. Fundraiser proceeds were donated to local food pantries serviced by the Food Bank of South Central Michigan and Toledo Seagate Food Bank, made possible by PS Food Mart Charities.

“We were pleased to again host ‘Fight Hunger, Give Hope’ at our PS Food Mart stores to our help local communities combat hunger,” said Vice President of Folk Oil, Jim Linton. “The continued support of CITGO, our partners and our customers allow us to make a real impact on families, a dollar at a time.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, in 2013 49.1 million Americans lived in households lacking adequate access to food, including 15.8 million children. Local food banks like the Food Bank of South Central Michigan make a meaningful impact on more than 120,000 of those families in need across the state.
