CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – April 9, 2019 – The weekend of April 12-13, 2019 is now officially recognized as Fiesta de la Flor Days in Corpus Christi, Texas in honor of Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla Perez.

Corpus Christi Mayor, Joe McComb, issued a mayoral proclamation on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, prior to the Corpus Christi City Council meeting, recognizing the cultural and historical significance of the Fiesta de la Flor Festival, Presented by CITGO, and designating April 12-13, 2019 as Fiesta de la Flor Days. “We’re glad to declare a special Fiesta de la Flor weekend, but in Corpus Christi, Selena is celebrated year-round. This proclamation just makes it a little more official,” said Corpus Christi Mayor Joe McComb.

During the ceremony, CITGO Petroleum Corporation presented City of Corpus Christi officials with a 36”x48” painting of Selena, created by local Corpus Christi artist, Gilbert Cantu. The portrait will be displayed in Corpus Christi’s American Bank Center, inside the Auditorium that has bared the name of the late singer since 1996.

“From its vibrant colors to its substantial scale, this painting captures the essence of Selena,” said CITGO General Manager of Community Relations, Corporate Social Responsibility and Legislative Affairs Larry Elizondo. “The artist did a phenomenal job depicting her likeness and CITGO is proud to present this gift to the City of Corpus Christi to be enjoyed by Selena fans for years and years to come. Additionally, CITGO is grateful to have the blessing of the Quintanilla family to publicly display the beautiful work of art.”

CITGO has served as Presenting Sponsor of Fiesta de la Flor since its inception in 2015. The Selenainspired music festival pays tribute to the late Tejano music superstar, attracting an estimated 59,000 visitors from eight countries, with an economic impact of over $11 million in 2018.
