Corpus Christi, TX – March 30, 2023 - CITGO continues our strong partnership with Zavala Elementary School in the Corpus Christi Independent School District. The school’s mission is to create a friendly and welcoming environment for all students. Recently, the school installed an ADA compliant swing set that was purchased with funds donated by CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery. A ribbon cutting was held to officially open the equipment for use to students with special needs.

“CITGO has always had a commitment to serving children of all backgrounds through our community involvement. We are proud that this addition to Zavala Elementary will allow all its students to feel included with their peers on the playground,” said Dennis Willig, Vice President & General Manager Corpus Christi Refinery. “CITGO is proud to support Zavala and applauds the staff’s advocacy for inclusion on campus.”

Judith Hinojosa, principal of Zavala Elementary School, said the new playground equipment will serve the students who are in the adaptive education and early childhood special education classrooms. The swing set, which includes a wheelchair platform swing and a Jennswing® Adaptive Swing Seat, offers children with special needs the chance to experience the excitement of swinging while providing a safe and comfortable ride.

“We are so grateful for our partnership with CITGO and their willingness to help us secure this much-needed addition to our playground,” Hinojosa said. “We have students that are in wheelchairs, and this is going to be the first time they ever get to ride in a swing. It’s just a blessing for our Zavala Aviators.”
